Mission Statement:
"A network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need...."
The St. Vincent de Paul Society provides help and comfort to the needy and discouraged through parish "Conferences" or “Branches” — groups of volunteers at an individual parish. Material help may be in the form of food, clothing, furniture, or occasionally shelter. It may be a referral to a local social service agency or simply a sympathetic ear.
The St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) ministry at St. John Vianney is one of the oldest ministries at our parish.
Volunteers are the backbone of our efforts to serve the poor. SVdP provides opportunities to serve the poor directly in our own parish ministry by meeting with individuals or families — "neighbors"— by appointment, on Monday through Thursday evenings at our parish office. Volunteers work together in pairs to listen and identify the "neighbors" needs and do what they can to provide assistance.
An Invitation to Serve
No special qualifications are required, other than the desire to join with others to help those in need for the love of God. Training, mentoring, and support is provided to all who volunteer.
What Membership Involves
- Meet with members twice a month in the evening – either online or in-person
- Visit with families and individuals in need in SJV offices one night per month
- Assist the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store by collecting clothing parishioners donate at the weekend Masses twice yearly (Bundle Sunday)
- Help organize the "Angel Tree" to help parishioners to provide gifts and food for our clients at Christmastime
Some parishioners also give a few hours serving in the St. Vincent de Paul stores. If you would like to volunteer at one of the SVdP thrift stores (in Pleasant Hill, Pittsburg or Brentwood), please call (925) 439-5060.
In addition to volunteering in our parish ministry or working at one of the local SVdP stores, there are many ways to assist the St. Vincent de Paul ministry. Your support can be through donations of clothes, furniture, or automobiles, or simply cash donations, which are fundamental to support our SJV St. Vincent de Paul, parish ministry.
Donations can be made online by clicking here to get to our online giving system. You may also mail a check to the Parish Office or drop a check into the mail slot at the Parish Office door. Your check will be processed as usual.
Thank you to our parishioners who so faithfully and generously serve in this critical ministry!
