Did you know that we are never too old to grow in our faith? It’s true! Each one of us is called to continue to mature in our Catholic Christian faith throughout our lifetime. In fact, “life-long” has become the new buzzword in Catholic religious education. The Lifelong Faith Formation ministries, often defined by the word “catechesis” or “catechetical”, include opportunities for people of all ages and all stages of life. Hooray!
The word catechesis comes from a Greek word meaning "to echo the teaching" or “to echo the faith”. In other words, catechesis is an interactive process in which the Word of God re-sounds (echoes) between and among the proclaimer, the one receiving the message, and the Holy Spirit! It’s a dynamic process in which Jesus (the Word of God), the catechist (teacher/proclaimer), the disciple (student) and the Holy Spirit all come together to light a fire in our hearts and keep the fire burning and re-sounding. Through word, worship, service and community, catechesis seeks to lead all God's people to an ever deepening relationship with God who reveals himself in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.
How is God calling you to participate more fully in the church’s mission of catechesis? There are many opportunities for you here at St. John Vianney either as a catechist, a disciple, or both! The Lifelong Faith Formation ministries at St. John Vianney include:
Family -based faith formation classes
Junior High and High School faith formation
Sacramental Preparation for children and adults
Small Christian Community faith sharing/study groups
