WEEK 2 - April 19-25: The Road to Emmaus

A Disciple Recognizes

In Week Two of this series, we see Jesus’ compassion and encouragement on the road to Emmaus. He enters into the confusion and disappointment of the disciples after His resurrection, explaining the Scriptures to them and opening their hearts to understand God’s plan. Jesus walks with them patiently, turning their sadness into hope and revealing Himself fully in the breaking of the bread.

OPENING PRAYER

Risen Lord Jesus, Just as You joined the disciples on the road to Emmaus, walk with us now. Open our eyes to see Your presence in our lives and help our hearts burn with faith as we reflect on Scripture and break bread together. Speak to us today through Your Word, through one another, and through Your Spirit. Give us courage to bring our doubts and struggles honestly before You. Amen.

INSIGHT FROM OUR READINGS

In this passage, we see Jesus’ compassion and encouragement on the road to Emmaus. He enters into the confusion and disappointment of the disciples after His resurrection, explaining the Scriptures to them and opening their hearts to understand God’s plan. Jesus walks with them patiently, turning their sadness into hope and revealing Himself fully in the breaking of the bread. This story reminds us that Jesus is alive and present today, ready to meet us in our struggles and guide us toward renewed faith.

ADDITIONAL SCRIPTURE PASSAGES

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” Psalm 23:4

“Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” Luke 24:32

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION AND DIALOG

  1. The disciples were walking with heavy hearts on the road to Emmaus. Can you relate to times when your hope felt lost or your heart was heavy?
  2. Jesus explained the Scriptures to them, showing how everything pointed to Him. How does reflecting on Scripture help you see God’s work in your life? Is reading Scripture a regular habit for you or an area you’d like to grow in?
  3. The disciples recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread. What are ways you personally experience Christ’s presence today? In whom, do you encounter Christ in our world today?
  4. How does it encourage you to know that Jesus walks with us through confusion, disappointment, and doubt?
  5. What is one practical step you can take this week to encounter Jesus more fully — through prayer, Scripture, or the Eucharist?
